The Ice Cream Farm

The Ice Cream Farm is one of our favourite places to visit as a family. It combines our love of ice cream with lots of family fun. There is so much to do and nowhere else quite like it.

There is no charge to enter The Ice Cream Farm. The excellent playground inside, called Daisy’s Garden, is also free. There are other activities to take part in, but how many or how little of those you choose is up to you. Take a look at the website for details of all the activities. Here are our top two:

Honeycomb Canyon
This is a large indoor sand and water play area. There are things to climb on, things to operate and plenty of places to splash. The water is very shallow but children get wet. It’s pretty obvious who didn’t know about the water play, because their children are wearing pants and soggy clothes! I recommend taking swim wear or a complete change of clothes and definitely a towel!!
Under 12 months – Free, Under 3s – £3.00, 3 and Overs – £3.75, no charge for adults.
One hour sessions in peak times.

Strawberry Falls.
I didn’t know that I liked crazy golf until I started beating my husband and getting holes in one. It actually turned out to be my favourite part of the day. The course is easily accessible. Lots of toddlers and young children are there having a go without it being too long or too difficult. It’s set around the impressive strawberry waterfall and giant ice creams so, providing you can keep your children from attempting to dive into the strawberry water, it’s lots of fun. £3.75 per player.

We have visited The Ice Cream farm and spent all day there doing lots of activities. We have also called in on route to somewhere else, just stopping for around 90 minutes and paying for one activity. The free outdoor play area is very, very good and will keep children entertained. During our full day visit, we used it in between activities to break the day up.

If you are visiting over lunch time, take note that there is a no picnic policy. This is explained on the website and is part of keeping The Ice Cream Farm free to enter. During our day visit, we did use Pit Stop café. Food was similar in price to other attractions. However, the queue took a while as we were there during busy school holidays. If there are lots of visitors, it’s worth joining the café queue before your children are ravenously hungry. Here are some other top tips for a great visit:

Top Tip: Book your play slots more than one day in advance on their website so that you don’t miss out on activities. The diggers are very popular.

Top Tip: The queue in the Ice Cream Parlour can be long. If you are happy to eat the same ice cream out of tub rather than a cone, these can be purchased from the shop inside the right hand side of The Ice Cream Parlour. The tubs queue is significantly shorter!

Top Tip: If you plan on doing more than a couple of activities, get a play pass. There are various options on the website. The pass reduces the cost of activities, by you paying for a set number in advance.

Top Tip: Try the ice cream- it’s delicious!

Michael Morpurgo's Farm Boy @ Lichfield Garrick

The author Michael Morpurgo is a brilliant story teller and his Farm Boy story is no exception. This production has at its core a story that hooks you in and keeps you captivated. A grandfather and his grandson talk you through stories from their family that intertwine with the history of World War One and life on a farm. This play had parts that made me smile and chuckle but more parts that gave me goosebumps and a ripple of emotion. When grandfather made a confession and called on his grandson to help him, I was hooked waiting to hear the burden that he had born for his entire life. No spoilers though, come and see the play for yourself. The music in Farm Boy is an original score written by Matt Marks. It enhanced the story telling evoking memories and pictures in my mind. This combined with the strength of the story is clearly the reason the show has been at the Edinburgh Fringe and 'off Broadway' in New York. Throughout the show, there are just two actors on...

Review of Gangsta Granny by Heartbreak Productions.

In 10 years time, my children won’t specifically remember the occasions that I picked them up from school, cooked our favourite pasta dish or watched their swimming lesson. But they will remember some of things that we did that were out of the ordinary. They will remember some of the memories that we made together. As we headed out of the door on Friday evening, I knew we were making memories. I was just hoping it wasn’t going to be because the whole family had got soaked to the skin sitting in a park on a Friday night watching a play. We had a flask full of hot chocolate, a box of malteasers and some large umbrellas borrowed from a neighbour. We were heading to a Heartbreak Productions outdoor show in Walsall Arboretum. It was pretty exciting heading out in the evening and walking through an empty park to get to the bandstand where the show was being staged. When I told Little Lady what we were going to see, she was extremely excited. In fact, we all were because ...

Entry to ThinkTank is £14 per adult and £10.25 per child. Under 3’s are free and during Birmingham term time there is a special adult and toddler (aged 3-5) ticket for £15. My advice woul...
