Review of Lichfield Maize Maze

Open for just over a year, Lichfield Maize Maze is at the entrance to the village of Wall just off the A5. It's a fully outdoor attraction with plenty to keep kids happy. Each year the shape of the maze changes. Last year it was a bumble bee and this year it's an owl which can be seen from the viewing tower inside the maze.

On arrival at the maze, we were given our map and stickers. I knew that was a sure fire way to motivate my children to race around the maze. We started on the smaller maize and my youngest loved matching up the bird eggs to their nests at the points dotted around the maze. We did get a little lost! But, once my 10 year old started directing us round with the map we were on a roll and allocated all the stickers.

Outside of the maze, there are more areas for children to play: a tractor area, swing ball and a large sandpit. All great for free-range children. My oldest enjoyed climbing all over the hay bales and turned it into an assault course. On a warm, sunny day you could easily spend a few hours here.

Next to the mazes are fields of sunflowers. They are just starting to open. Watch Lichfield Maize Maze's socials because if you time your visit right, they view will be stunning. We were a week or so too early today and only a few had opened. Sunflowers can be purchased at the maze.

The second larger maize was definitely trickier. We only managed a small part of it. (Probably because the lure of a generous slice of cake at the outdoor cafe was too appealing!) To complete the second sticker trail in large maze can take around an hour. In both mazes, you do need to stay together as a family. Pushchairs and wheel chairs would cope in the maze. It is a bit muddy and uneven, but if you don't mind a bit of mud, then go for it.

Opening of the attraction is seasonal. It's open everyday in the school summer holidays. If in doubt, please do check on their Facebook page or Insta account.

Ticket can be purchased online for a slightly cheaper price than on the gate. Here are the online prices:

Adult £8
Child (3-16 years) £6
Concession (Over 65’s) £6
Family ticket (2 adults & 2 children or 1 adult & 3 children) £25
Toddlers (0-2 years) Free

Whether it's wellies and rain coats or sun cream and hats, this maze is a sure fire way to have family fun outside this holiday. Give the maze a social media follow for more information.

Michael Morpurgo's Farm Boy @ Lichfield Garrick

The author Michael Morpurgo is a brilliant story teller and his Farm Boy story is no exception. This production has at its core a story that hooks you in and keeps you captivated. A grandfather and his grandson talk you through stories from their family that intertwine with the history of World War One and life on a farm. This play had parts that made me smile and chuckle but more parts that gave me goosebumps and a ripple of emotion. When grandfather made a confession and called on his grandson to help him, I was hooked waiting to hear the burden that he had born for his entire life. No spoilers though, come and see the play for yourself. The music in Farm Boy is an original score written by Matt Marks. It enhanced the story telling evoking memories and pictures in my mind. This combined with the strength of the story is clearly the reason the show has been at the Edinburgh Fringe and 'off Broadway' in New York. Throughout the show, there are just two actors on the stage: Gran

Beauty and the Beast @ Lichfield Garrick

“That was so funny I nearly wet myself!”  Such was my 11 year old daughter’s review of the Lichfield Garrick’s 2023 Christmas Panto - Beauty and the Beast. Truth be told, although I hopefully have more bladder control than that, I was in pretty close agreement with her. I’m not sure which part of the show was the most hilarious. It may have been the obligatory slapstick gunge and slide routine making pudding in the Beast’s castle kitchen. However, Figgy the animated (and socially borderline) Greek statue was in hot pursuit. Had I been the unsuspecting gentleman who sat on the front row I may have found the audience participation rather less comedic (he loved it really!!!). What I do know though is that by the end of the evening my sides hurt, I’d become seriously dehydrated and my daughter and I were ready for the festive Christmas season to begin! You may wonder how Beauty and the Beast could pass for panto? However, Sam Rabone’s annual Pantomime dame, reappearing as Belle’s hideously
